In the Name of the Power of Algorithms!

In today’s world, where digitalization is transforming every aspect of life, social media platforms have evolved far beyond mere spaces for sharing information. These platforms, which shape individuals’ thought processes, guide their daily behaviors, and even reconstruct their identities, lie at the heart of an invisible engineering process. While people believe they are exercising freedoms they consider their own in these digital spaces—where they spend hours every day—they are, in reality, being steered toward invisible boundaries. These boundaries form the foundation of segregation processes that often go unnoticed yet have profound effects. Studies on how social media divides users reveal that this phenomenon is not merely a result of individual choices but rather a product of systematic and structural construction.

Behind the scenes, algorithms silently operating within social networks record individuals’ digital movements. Data such as how long a user views a post, which content they like, or which links they click provide platforms with a goldmine of information. This data is used not only to enhance user experience but also to capture attention, keep users online longer, and guide their behavior. As a result, individuals are left alone with content deemed suitable for them—a process known as the Filter Bubble.

Introduced by Eli Pariser in 2011, the Filter Bubble concept refers to social media algorithms delivering content based on users’ past preferences, shielding them from diverse perspectives. When a user likes a political post, the algorithm continues to show similar content. As the user keeps clicking on ideologically aligned posts, the system reinforces these behaviors. Over time, individuals encounter only content that supports their worldview. This blocks exposure to differing ideas, creating a form of “digital isolation.” Users, unaware of alternative perspectives, begin to believe their own views hold universal truth, deepening societal polarization. For instance, if someone exclusively engages with vegan lifestyle content on Instagram or Facebook, the algorithm will flood them with plant-based recipes and anti-animal-product posts. Over time, this becomes not just a digital preference but an “information trap” that stifles understanding of diverse lifestyles.

However, this segregation is not limited to one-sided algorithmic decisions. Individuals actively participate in the process. Cass Sunstein’s 2001 concept of the Echo Chamber highlights people’s tendency to interact with those who validate their beliefs while excluding differing viewpoints. Social media grants users the freedom to curate their social circles, but this also clusters like-minded individuals. Over time, individuals filter out conflicting information, suppress opposing voices, and hear only their own echoes. Echo Chambers narrow intellectual horizons and can push people toward radical stances. On X (formerly Twitter), this dynamic creates “digital towers” during politically charged election periods, where users only encounter their own views.

These developments reveal that digital platforms are far from neutral intermediaries. Social media companies do not merely observe user behavior—they devise strategies to shape it. Here, Shoshana Zuboff’s 2019 concept of Surveillance Capitalism comes into play. Surveillance Capitalism refers to digital platforms harvesting user data for economic gain. But this process extends beyond targeted ads. Behavioral predictions—about what users will like, buy, or believe—are generated, and content is tailored accordingly. In other words, while individuals believe they act freely, they are trapped within data-driven predictions. The Cambridge Analytica scandal laid this bare: psychological profiles mined from millions of Facebook interactions were used to manipulate voter behavior. This reality shows how even democratic processes can be hijacked by social networks or institutions practicing “social engineering.”

This manipulation is not confined to political or economic choices. It also distorts our perception of time, social relationships, and psychological well-being. Hartmut Rosa’s 2013 Social Acceleration Theory provides a framework for understanding how digitalization alters our sense of time. Social media pressures individuals to stay constantly online. Driven by the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), people spend more time on these platforms, leading to mental fatigue, fragmented attention, and superficial relationships. For example, someone scrolling through Instagram stories first thing in the morning or before bed becomes perpetually alert to notifications, replacing critical thought with rapid content consumption.

Together, these theories reveal that social media does not merely segregate individuals technically—it also drives cultural, psychological, and sociological division. Social media is reshaping humanity’s collective consciousness. As a result, these platforms, with their technical infrastructures, profit-driven models, and sociocultural impacts, are deepening divides that extend beyond the digital realm, leaving lasting scars on social harmony, democracy, and individual freedoms.

To pierce Filter Bubbles, escape Echo Chambers, and resist Surveillance Capitalism, we must redefine technology through human values. The solution is simple: Instead of letting algorithms define us, we must shape them to serve humanity’s needs.

To harness social media as a tool of liberation, we must recognize these divisive dynamics, look beyond algorithms, and cultivate critical digital literacy. Because true freedom lies not in passive consumption but in conscious, empowered engagement with the digital world.
